What it's like

High-energy classes built around choreography. You'll warm up thoroughly, drill dynamics and grounding, then spend the bulk of the class building and refining a combination. Expect an emphasis on performing rather than marking: the teacher will push you to do it full-out, because that's where it comes together. Groups run from beginner through advanced.

Commercial is generally danced in sneakers rather than socks or bare feet.

Why people practice this?

Dynamic range is what commercial trains, the ability to move from smooth and flowing into an explosive hit and back, cleanly. That control is what makes choreography read. Stage presence gets worked on directly rather than hoped for. Spatial awareness, focus, projection: all of it is taught. It's also the most immediately recognisable style. You'll learn material that looks like what you've watched, which is a particular kind of satisfying.

Is this for you?

You'll get on with Commercial if you:
• Want to dance like the videos you've watched
• Like sharp, powerful, high-energy movement
• Want to work on performance and presence
• Have a hiphop foundation and want to sharpen it

Newer to dance? The beginner and intermediate groups will get you there. A little hiphop background helps but isn't required.

Questions people ask

Do I need special shoes?

Mostly no. Bare feet, socks or trainers are fine. Ballet is easier in soft shoes.

Am I too old?

No. Our beginners groups run from twenties to sixties, and most people are starting from nothing.

Can I try first?

Yes, at the Trial Dance Weekend just before each season, €7.50 a class. For drop-in classes, the Trial Week is €19.95.

How do I book a course?

On the website, at yourtribes.nl/courses. Your spot is then secured for the full course.

New to dance?

Yes. Every style has a beginners group, and each course states its level. Email discover@yourtribes.nl if you're unsure.

Coming on my own?

Plenty of people do. No pressure to socialise, connection happens over time.

What should I wear?

Anything you can move in. Classes are barefoot, and props are provided.
