Your questions

Everything people usually ask before their first class, and a few things they ask after.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

X questions founds

I’m new, which class should I start with?

It really depends on your experience and how comfortable you feel with movement. Some people prefer starting slower (Mild Flow, Mobility & Release...), others enjoy jumping straight into something more dynamic. Because everyone's starting point is different, we usually recommend our Trial Week. It lets you try different classes and teachers so you can feel what suits you best, without having to decide upfront. If you're unsure, email discover@yourtribes.nl and we're happy to guide you.

Do I need experience?

Most classes are open to different levels. Teachers offer options, and you’re always encouraged to move at your own pace.

I'm new to dance. Can I still join a course?

Yes. Many people join our dance courses without any previous dance experience. Each course description states the level, and every style has a beginners group. If you're unsure which one is right, email discover@yourtribes.nl and we're happy to help you find the fit.

What if I don’t know anyone?

That’s completely okay. Many people come on their own.

There’s no pressure to socialise or perform, just come as you are. The space is welcoming, and connection tends to happen naturally over time.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing you can move freely in. Classes are practiced barefoot, so no shoes are needed. You don’t need to bring any specific equipment unless stated in the class description.

Can I book a class for someone else?

With a class card, yes. You can book two spots under your own name when you're occasionally bringing a friend. With a membership or an unlimited pass it isn't possible, because those are personal and priced around one person's attendance, so the system only allows one spot per booking. You can still buy a single class or a small card for your friend and book that under your name. Either way, please keep it occasional.

What's the difference between a class and a course?

A drop-in class is a single hour you book whenever it suits you, paid with a class card, pass or membership. Nothing carries over from one week to the next and you can come as often or as rarely as you like. A course runs for a whole season with the same group and the same teacher every week. It builds week on week, it's booked and paid as one, and it ends with a show if you want one. Yoga, Pilates, strength and mobility are drop-in. Dance is mostly courses, though a few dance classes are drop-in too.

What's the difference between the Trial Week and the Trial Dance Weekend?

This Trial Weekend is specifically for the new dance season: fifteen classes over two days at €7.50 each, so you can try styles and teachers before committing to a course.

The Trial Week is something else. It's a pass for our drop-in classes — dance, yoga, Pilates, strength and mobility — which run all year. One week unlimited for €19.95, available any time, once per person.

Can I come to class if I'm pregnant?

Yes. We have a class designed for it: Prenatal Yoga, gentle movement and deep rest through pregnancy, taught by teachers experienced with prenatal movement who'll adapt everything to your stage.

A few things worth knowing. Please check with your midwife or doctor before joining, just to be sure it's right for you. Let your teacher know which trimester you're in so they can adjust for you. And nothing is ever compulsory. If anything doesn't feel right on the day, you simply rest. That's always the right call.

If you'd like to join a regular class too, just let the teacher know beforehand so they can keep an eye out for you.

Do I need to be flexible?

No, and this is the most common reason people don't come. Every pose is adjusted with props to meet the body you have. Flexibility is a possible outcome, never a requirement.

Can I come if I'm injured?

Often yes, but tell your teacher before class. Yin holds positions for a long time, so anything acute needs a modification rather than a wait-and-see.

Is there a minimum age for adult classes?

There's no hard cut-off. From around fifteen, a young person can join adult classes and courses with the teacher's agreement and a parent or guardian's consent. It happens quite often, and several of our teenage dancers move across into adult courses. Email discover@yourtribes.nl and we'll check with the teacher.

How do I book a class?

You can book your class via our website (yourtribes.nl/schedule) or through the Fit by Wix app
(Access code: NCL5XG).

• Create an account
• Purchase a pass, class card, or membership
• Go to the schedule and book your spot

Booking is required, as spots are limited.

We recommend using the app for easy booking and cancellations.

How late can I cancel a class?

It's free to cancel up to three hours before class. After that, it counts as a late cancellation or no-show.

What happens if a class is full?

Join the waiting list. More than 3 hours before the class, you'll be added automatically if a spot opens up and we'll let you know. Inside those 3 hours nobody is added automatically, so check the schedule and book yourself if something frees up. First come, first served.

What happens if I don't turn up?

With a class card, the class is deducted from your balance. With a pass or membership, your first 3 late cancellations or no-shows each month are free. After that, there's a €7.50 fee.

What happens if a class is cancelled?

We usually find another teacher. If we do have to cancel, we'll email you and the class is automatically returned to your card or pass.

Can I pause my card, pass or membership?

Yes. If you're injured, pregnant or away for a while, email discover@yourtribes.nl and we'll pause it. Pauses run from a minimum of 3 weeks to a maximum of 6 months, and we look at each request individually. Memberships paid by SEPA direct debit can't be paused for technical reasons, and Bedrijfsfitness memberships are managed on their own platform.

Can I cancel my membership?

Memberships run for one year and renew automatically after the initial term.

You can cancel your membership after the first year by emailing discover@yourtribes.nl
at least 30 days before your next billing date.

Please note that refunds are not provided once a new billing cycle has begun.

When does my card or pass start?

You choose the activation date yourself at checkout, so nothing starts counting down before you're ready. That's also why cards and passes aren't refundable: you decide when the clock starts.

How long is a class card valid?

It depends on the size of the card, counted from the activation date you choose. A 1-class card is valid for 1 month, 5 classes for 3 months, 10 classes for 6 months, and 20 classes for a full year. If a card expires before you've used it, we can reactivate it for €7.50.

Are cards and passes refundable?

No, cards and passes aren't refundable. That's why you get to choose your own activation date, so nothing starts before you're ready. If something changes, injury, pregnancy or a long trip, email discover@yourtribes.nl and ask about pausing instead. Courses have their own cancellation terms.

How long am I committed to a membership?

Memberships run for twelve months and then continue month to month. After that first year you can cancel any time by emailing discover@yourtribes.nl at least 30 days before your next billing date. Refunds aren't given once a new billing cycle has started.

Can I use my pass or membership for a course?

No. Dance courses and kids courses are booked and paid per course, separately from class cards, passes and memberships. The price is shown on each course. Cards, passes and memberships cover the drop-in classes on the weekly schedule.

My card expired before I used it. Can I get it back?

Yes. If a class card runs out before you've used all your classes, we can reactivate it for a fee of €7.50. Email discover@yourtribes.nl and we'll arrange it.

Do unused classes carry over?

On BASE and PLUS memberships, unused classes don't carry over to the next four-week period. If something unusual came up, illness or travel or anything out of the ordinary, email discover@yourtribes.nl with the reason and we'll look at it case by case. Class cards work differently: those hold their classes until the card's own expiry date.

Why can't I pause my membership?

Two kinds of membership can't be paused. Memberships paid by SEPA direct debit can't be paused for technical reasons in the payment system. And memberships arranged through Bedrijfsfitness Nederland are managed entirely on their platform, so contact them directly about billing or membership periods.

Who can buy the Trial Week?

The Trial Week is for people new to Tribes, and can be bought once per person. It gives you unlimited classes for one week from the activation date you choose, so you can try different styles and teachers before deciding on anything longer.

How do I get the student discount?

Email discover@yourtribes.nl with a photo of your student card or your enrolment confirmation, and we'll send you a personal discount code. It's 15% off, valid for a year, and applies to all cards, passes and memberships. It's available to every student except PhD students.

When do the dance courses start?

Our main dance courses start in February and September and run for 12 to 18 weeks. The exact number depends on the holidays and when the final performance takes place. You train with the same group and teacher throughout, building your skills and working towards that performance together. We also offer shorter courses in January and June, while during summer our drop-in schedule takes over.

How do I book a dance course?

Go to yourtribes.nl/courses, find the course you'd like to join and book your spot. Once the confirmation lands in your inbox, you're in and your spot is secured for the full course.

Can I try a dance course before committing?

Yes. Before each new season we run a Trial Dance Weekend: fifteen classes over two days for €7.50 each. Try different styles, meet the teachers and find the course that feels right for you. Subscribe to our newsletter to hear when bookings open.

What if the course is full?

Email discover@yourtribes.nl to join the waiting list. If a spot opens up, we'll email you straight away.

Can I change my booking and switch to another course?

It depends on availability in the other course and how far into the course we are. Email discover@yourtribes.nl as soon as you know you'd like to switch, and we'll do our best to see what's possible.

What if I miss a part of the course?

Missing a class now and then is no problem. Because the course builds from week to week, missed classes aren't refunded or transferred. Your teacher shares recordings of the choreography in your course WhatsApp group, so you can catch up and stay connected with your fellow dancers.

Can I get a refund on a course?

Yes, up to 14 days before the course starts. You'll receive a full refund minus a €7.50 processing fee. After that, your spot is reserved for the full course and refunds are not available. Exceptions may be made in cases of prolonged illness, pregnancy or relocation, and are assessed individually.

What if I withdraw during the course?

When you book, your spot is yours for the full course, so we don't normally offer refunds if you stop early. In exceptional circumstances, such as prolonged illness, pregnancy or relocation, we may be able to offer credit towards another Tribes service. Email discover@yourtribes.nl and we'll see what's possible.

Is participation in the show mandatory?

No, performing is optional, although it is great fun to join. The performance is a celebration of everything you've created and worked on together throughout the course, and a chance to share it on stage. If performing isn't for you, or you're not available on the show date, just let your teacher know.

Are there additional show participation fees?

Yes, there's a small participation fee of around €10, which helps cover costumes, professional photos and video, and production costs. We keep the fee as low as possible so everyone who wants to perform can take part. The exact amount is shared in advance. As performing is optional, the participation fee isn't included in your course price.

Where does my class take place?

We have five studios across Leiden and Wassenaar. Most drop-in classes are at Doezastraat 2A and Floris Versterlaan 61 in Leiden. Dance courses and kids classes are mostly at Broekplein 6 in the Merenwijk and Haagweg 4F5, and in Wassenaar we're at Kerkstraat 75. The location of each class is shown in the schedule, and you can filter by location on the website and in the app.

Can I park at the studio?

There are no parking spots reserved for Tribes at any of our studios. Paid street parking is available near the Leiden centre studios, and parking around Broekplein in the Merenwijk is usually easier. Most members come by bike. Each studio page has more detail on getting there.

Can I shower at the studio?

There's a shower at Floris Versterlaan, downstairs. The other studios don't have one, so plan accordingly if you're heading somewhere afterwards.

Do I need to bring my own mat?

No, mats and props (blocks, blankets, chairs, weights, etc.) are included in class.

If you prefer your own mat, you’re welcome to bring it. Your comfort is what matters most.

What language are classes taught in?

All our adult classes and courses are taught in English, as we welcome an international community. You don't need perfect English, teachers keep instructions clear and accessible. For kids, classes in Leiden are taught in Dutch, and everything in Wassenaar is in English.

Are the studios accessible?

None of our studios have a lift.

Broekplein is on the ground floor. Doezastraat is on the ground floor too, with a few steps to get in. Haagweg and Wassenaar are both on the first floor, reached by stairs, and Floris Versterlaan has a studio on each of its two floors.

If stairs are difficult for you, email discover@yourtribes.nl and we'll help you find a class you can reach comfortably.

Where do I leave my things during class?

There are no lockers, but your things are safe. Bags and coats come into the studio with you rather than being left outside, and the studio door is closed before class begins.

How early should I arrive?

We recommend arriving 10 minutes before class so you can settle in without rush.

Can I rent a studio?

Yes. All five studios can be rented by the hour for workshops, rehearsals or one-off events, and we also do fixed weekly and seasonal bookings at a reduced rate. Rates, room details and availability are all on our rental page at yourtribes.nl/rent.

What if I arrive late?

For safety and flow reasons, entry may not be possible after the class has started. We recommend arriving 10 minutes early.

Can my child try a class first?

Yes, and it's free. Fill in the trial lesson form on our website and we'll get in touch to arrange a class, or email discover@yourtribes.nl with the class you'd like.

Can my child have longer to settle in?

Yes. We offer a trial month for €40, so your child can try the class or classes they're interested in for four weeks. If they then enrol, we deduct the trial month from the course fee.

The trial month runs from the start of the season until the autumn holidays. After that, children join a course in the usual way. Pre-Ballet is the exception: there we offer the trial month all year round.

Sign up on the website or email discover@yourtribes.nl.

How do I enrol my child?

Go to yourtribes.nl/kids-teens, find the class you want and register from there. You'll need to create an account the first time. Once the season has started you can no longer enrol online, so email discover@yourtribes.nl instead and we'll arrange it.

The season has already started. Can my child still join?

Yes. Email discover@yourtribes.nl with the class you'd like and we'll arrange the enrolment.

What does a kids class cost?

Prices are shown on each class. You can pay in one or two instalments, and if your child joins later in the year we adjust the price accordingly.

What language are kids classes taught in?

Kids classes in Leiden are taught in Dutch. Everything in Wassenaar is taught in English, for children as well as adults.

Where do the kids classes take place?

Most kids classes in Leiden are at Broekplein 6 in the Merenwijk, with some on Wednesdays at Haagweg 4F5. In Wassenaar we're at Kerkstraat 75, on the first floor of theater Warenar. Each class page shows its location.

What should my child wear?

For younger children there's no dress code, just something they can move freely in. A leotard works well for ballet.

The selection groups do have a dress code. Modern: black leotard, black footless tights, black hotpants. Classical: pink tights, black leotard, black skirt, pink split-sole ballet shoes. Streetdance: black sneakers of any brand, tight black leggings, and a top of their choice.

Where do I buy dance clothes?

Turn- en Balletshop on Broekplein in Leiden stocks everything. Danswinkel Den Haag also carries it, and Tribes members get 10% off there.

Can parents watch?

Twice a season we hold open classes where parents, grandparents and anyone else are welcome. The teachers announce those dates.

Can my child bring a friend?

Twice a year we run a special bring-a-friend class. Beyond that, we always try to place friends in the same group.

My child wants to stop. How does that work?

We have a six-month notice period. If you simply don't enrol for the following year, your child is automatically unenrolled.

Didn't find your answer?
