Yin & Nidra

Sarah Vreijling

What it's like

Two halves. The first is yin: a handful of floor-based shapes held for several minutes each, well supported with bolsters, blocks and blankets. The second is nidra. You'll lie down, get covered, and be guided through a spoken relaxation with sound. Nothing is asked of you physically at all. The room is dark and warm. Falling asleep is fine and happens often. You'll leave slower than you arrived, which is the point.

Tribes Leiden Yoga Yin and Nidra

Why people practice this?

People come for sleep. Yoga nidra puts you in a state between waking and sleeping, and an hour of it is widely reported to feel like considerably more rest than an hour of lying awake. The yin half does the physical work first, releasing the hips, back and shoulders, so the body has nothing left to complain about by the time the nidra begins. And there's the simple fact that almost nobody is guided into rest anymore. Being talked down, with sound, by someone else, removes the effort of trying to relax.

Is this for you?

You'll get on with Yin & Nidra if you:
• Sleep badly, or wake up still tired
• Carry stress in your body and can't put it down
• Want the most passive hour available
• Have never meditated and don't want to sit up straight to try

Complete beginner? This is arguably the easiest class at Tribes. You lie down and listen.

Questions people ask

Do I need to meditate already?

No. You're guided throughout, and a wandering mind is completely normal.

Can I come injured?

Often yes, but tell your teacher first so they can adjust.

Will I be bored?

Maybe at first. Most people find something shifts after two or three classes.

Do I need to be flexible?

No. Every pose is adjusted with props. Flexibility is an outcome, not a requirement.

Do I need a mat?

No. Mats and props are provided. Bring your own if you prefer.

How do I book?

Website or the Fit by Wix app, code NCL5XG. You'll need a pass or card first.
