What it's like

Classes follow a structured progression. You'll warm up through floor work and improvisation, move into technical exercises, swings, turns, jumps. And finish with travelling combinations across the floor. The emphasis is on precision and body awareness rather than covering ground quickly. Expect to repeat things until the quality is right. We run beginner through advanced, so the level you join sets the pace.

Tribes Leiden Dance Course Modern

Why people practice this?

Technique is the foundation, and modern gives you a lot of it: weight shifts, fall and recovery, control through the floor. Dancers who train it move more securely in every other style. But the reason people stay is expression. Modern asks what you think a phrase means, not just whether you executed it. And that question changes how you dance. It also builds a specific kind of strength. Getting up and down from the floor repeatedly, under control, is more demanding than it looks.

Is this for you?

You'll get on with Modern if you:
• Want technique and expression rather than one or the other
• Like working into the floor as much as standing
• Have danced before and want depth
• Are drawn to movement that carries meaning Complete beginner? Start in the beginners course. It's built for people with no dance experience at all.

Questions people ask

Do I need special shoes?

Mostly no. Bare feet, socks or trainers are fine. Ballet is easier in soft shoes.

Am I too old?

No. Our beginners groups run from twenties to sixties, and most people are starting from nothing.

Can I try first?

Yes, at the Trial Dance Weekend just before each season, €7.50 a class. For drop-in classes, the Trial Week is €19.95.

How do I book a course?

On the website, at yourtribes.nl/courses. Your spot is then secured for the full course.

New to dance?

Yes. Every style has a beginners group, and each course states its level. Email discover@yourtribes.nl if you're unsure.

Coming on my own?

Plenty of people do. No pressure to socialise, connection happens over time.

What should I wear?

Anything you can move in. Classes are barefoot, and props are provided.

How do I book?

Website or the Fit by Wix app, code NCL5XG. You'll need a pass or card first.
