What it's like

Depends which room you're in. Show Jazz builds dynamic, sassy combinations designed for the stage. Technical Jazz drills lines, dynamics and musicality at a high level. Jazz Burlesque works on character, presence and bold expression, with plenty of room for a wink or a slow reveal. All of them warm up thoroughly, work technique across the floor, and finish with choreography. Levels run from beginner through advanced, with some groups by invitation.

Why people practice this?

Performance quality is the thing jazz teaches better than anything else. Learning to project, to dance like someone's watching, changes how you carry every other style. The technique underneath is serious: isolations, footwork, battements, turns, jumps and suspensions all get drilled properly. And it's fun in a way that's easy to underestimate. Jazz gives permission to be big, which for a lot of adults is the most useful thing a dance class can do.

Is this for you?

You'll get on with Jazz if you:
• Want to perform, not just move
• Like sharp, musical, precise movement
• Enjoy choreography you can really commit to
• Want permission to be theatrical No jazz experience? Start in Show Jazz beginners. It assumes nothing and builds technique as it goes.

Questions people ask

Do I need special shoes?

Mostly no. Bare feet, socks or trainers are fine. Ballet is easier in soft shoes.

Am I too old?

No. Our beginners groups run from twenties to sixties, and most people are starting from nothing.

Can I try first?

Yes, at the Trial Dance Weekend just before each season, €7.50 a class. For drop-in classes, the Trial Week is €19.95.

How do I book a course?

On the website, at yourtribes.nl/courses. Your spot is then secured for the full course.

New to dance?

Yes. Every style has a beginners group, and each course states its level. Email discover@yourtribes.nl if you're unsure.

Coming on my own?

Plenty of people do. No pressure to socialise, connection happens over time.

What should I wear?

Anything you can move in. Classes are barefoot, and props are provided.

How do I book?

Website or the Fit by Wix app, code NCL5XG. You'll need a pass or card first.
