What it's like

Guided by music and by cues from the teacher, with total freedom in how you interpret them. You'll play with movement qualities, speed, space, and connection, to the music, to your own emotion, and to other people in the room. Expect to jump, turn, glide, wave, move heavy and light, tiny and detailed, huge and expressive, often in the same class. No sequences to learn and nothing to keep up with. Embracing the unpredictable is the whole method.

Why people practice this?

It expands your vocabulary. Working without choreography forces you into movement you'd never choose, and that range then shows up in every other style you dance. It's also the fastest route out of your head. There's nothing to remember and nothing to get right, so the self-consciousness that follows people into dance classes has nowhere to sit. And it reconnects movement to feeling. Being invited to move an emotion rather than a count is a different practice entirely. And for many people, a relieving one.

Is this for you?

You'll get on with Dance Improvisation if you:
• Want to move without learning choreography
• Feel stuck in the same movement habits
• Are a dancer looking to find your own voice
• Have never danced and are put off by counting

All levels, and genuinely no experience needed. There are no steps to get wrong.

Questions people ask

Am I too old?

No. Our beginners groups run from twenties to sixties, and most people are starting from nothing.

Will I have to perform?

Sometimes people watch each other, but nothing is compulsory. You can always observe instead.

New to dance?

Yes. Every style has a beginners group, and each course states its level. Email discover@yourtribes.nl if you're unsure.

Coming on my own?

Plenty of people do. No pressure to socialise, connection happens over time.

What should I wear?

Anything you can move in. Classes are barefoot, and props are provided.

Do I need a mat?

No. Mats and props are provided. Bring your own if you prefer.

How do I book?

Website or the Fit by Wix app, code NCL5XG. You'll need a pass or card first.
