What it's like
A mix of flowing sequences, floorwork and expressive combinations. Classes usually open with a warm-up that gets you moving through space, then build a phrase over the hour. You'll spend real time on the floor, rolling, sliding, transitioning between levels, which is the part most people find unfamiliar and then love. Open level means exactly that. Beginners and experienced dancers work the same material at their own depth.

Why people practice this?
Freedom in the body is what people report first. Contemporary asks you to move in curves and spirals rather than fixed positions, and that unlocks range most training never touches. Strength and coordination build as a by-product. Floorwork in particular develops the kind of full-body control that's hard to train deliberately. And it's a rare open-level dance class that genuinely works for both ends of the room, the material scales with how much you commit to it, not how much you already know.
Is this for you?
You'll get on with Contemporary if you:
• Want to dance but don't want rigid technique
• Like movement that flows rather than hits
• Are curious about floorwork
• Have a background in something else and want to move differently
Never danced? This is one of the easiest doors into dance at Tribes. Nothing is counted at you and nothing is memorised for long.

Questions people ask
Do I need special shoes?
Mostly no. Bare feet, socks or trainers are fine. Ballet is easier in soft shoes.
Am I too old?
No. Our beginners groups run from twenties to sixties, and most people are starting from nothing.
Can I try first?
Yes, at the Trial Dance Weekend just before each season, €7.50 a class. For drop-in classes, the Trial Week is €19.95.
How do I book a course?
On the website, at yourtribes.nl/courses. Your spot is then secured for the full course.
New to dance?
Yes. Every style has a beginners group, and each course states its level. Email discover@yourtribes.nl if you're unsure.
Coming on my own?
Plenty of people do. No pressure to socialise, connection happens over time.
What should I wear?
Anything you can move in. Classes are barefoot, and props are provided.
How do I book?
Website or the Fit by Wix app, code NCL5XG. You'll need a pass or card first.
